The History Of Edgeley
From the Past to the Present
Part One: The Early Years
Edgeley, a hamlet partly in Cheadle Bulkeley and partly in Cheadle Moseley, is part of the Borough of Stockport.
It is thought that today's Edgeley originates from an Eddyshelegh that is mentioned in some early land deeds of the area. In one, from 1249, Hamo de Eddiselie gave his brother a 'bovate and a half' of land (around 21 acres) in the villa of Eddiselie. There is evidence that some hundred years later in 1346 this manor had a small property called Bridge Hall, the family of which probably would have been wardens for the Bridge at Stockport.
The spelling has transformed through many variations including Eddisslegh, Edislee and Eggeley. The earliest mention of it's modern spelling is from 1504 in relation to a John Bridges of Edgeley, a trustee of Macclesfield Grammar School.
For most of it's history Edgeley was little more than open fields and farmland, although there is evidence of some buildings on the beginning of what will become the areas main road, Castle Street.
