A guide to the shops, business, area & history

Edgeley Stockport

Edgeley, part of Stockport's Borough since 1831, is a mainly residential village lying half a mile south west from Stockport's centre. It's situated about seven miles south east from Manchester's city centre.

Edgeley mostly comprises of Victorian era built terraced houses, with some larger and grander properties focused around the Alexandra Park area. In the late nineteenth century Alexandra Park was Edgeley House, home of the Syke's family who owned Edgeley's large Bleachworks. The Sykes initially owned most of the land in Edgeley, and due to the Bleachworks, employed many locals. They invested a great deal of wealth back into the area, including the parks, churches, schools and even Edgeley Park, the home of Stockport County & Sale Sharks, for which Edgeley is most famous for today.

Edgeley is one of Stockport's largest areas of shops, and one with the largest concentrations of family owned retailers. The shopping centre offers a diverse range of shops and business for all the family, with good prices and friendly service. The area is well served with many parking spaces and areas, most of which are free on non-match days.

Buses
Buses frequently pass through the centre of Edgeley during the daytime - approximately every 10 minutes. The single decker buses travel along Mercian Way towards Edgeley Road, the smaller mini buses detour from this route into and along Castle Street. Stagecoach operate most of the bus services for the area and these include the 11, 28, 313, 368 and 369. The cost of travel to and from Stockport's Central Bus Station is currently around one pound.

From Stockport the bus stops are: at the top of Mercian Way just after the roundabout; midway, outside Stockport County F.C; outside the beggining of Alexandra Park. Towards Stockport the bus stops are: outside Edward Mellor at the bottom of Castle Street; midway, outside Stockport County F.C.

Trains
Stockport Train Station is on Edgeley's doorstep across the road from the top of Castle Street. The journey to and from Manchester takes around 10 minutes. As most of the trains to and from Manchester stop at Stockport there's little point listing them, but below are a couple of useful links:
